Micro vs Macro Influencers: Where Should Your Budget Go?

Every founder asks it eventually: "Should we get one big influencer or twenty small ones?" The honest answer is that follower count is the least useful number on a creator's profile. Here's the framework we use to allocate budgets at Primenaire.

What the tiers are actually good at

  • Nano (1K–10K): highest trust, lowest polish. Their audience is literally friends and neighbours. Great for hyperlocal businesses and honest reviews; terrible for scale.
  • Micro (10K–100K): the workhorse tier. Niche authority, engagement rates of 4–8%, and rates low enough to test many creators at once. This is where most D2C conversion budgets belong.
  • Macro (100K–1M): reach with a face. Good for launches and credibility-by-association. Engagement dips, price jumps — buy them for moments, not months.
  • Celebrity (1M+): awareness theatre. Works when distribution and retail presence can absorb the attention. If you can't fulfil a demand spike, don't buy one.

The 70/20/10 split

For most growth-stage brands we recommend: 70% micro (conversion engine, always on), 20% macro (quarterly reach spikes tied to launches), 10% experiments (new platforms, new formats, nano armies). Rebalance quarterly based on tracked results — not vanity metrics.

The vetting that matters more than size

Before any tier, audit: audience authenticity (bot followers are still rampant), audience location (an Indian creator with 60% overseas followers is useless for COD-heavy D2C), past brand work performance, and content quality consistency. We show brands this data before they approve a single name — insist on the same from anyone you work with.

Where brands overspend

The single most common waste we audit: one macro influencer bought with the entire quarterly budget, no usage rights, no tracking links, posted once, vanished. The same money on fifteen vetted micro creators with usage rights would have produced fifteen tests, five winners, and a library of ad creative. Volume of shots on goal beats one big swing, almost every time.
